Description
Most animals perceive the eye contact as a threat, but in humans it creates a deep, magical connection, it elevates emotional arousal, activation becomes widespread across cortical structures as emotional arousal is often associated with the amygdala. As gaze is directed towards the perceiver, activation increases in a region in the right amygdala. Prolonged eye contact has been thought to release phenylethylamine, a chemical responsible for feelings of attraction. It has also been thought to release oxytocin, the love chemical most closely associated with longer term bonding and commitment.
Is an interesting attention game, as we cannot focus on both eyes at the same time.
And we focus on the center of the eye, the black void that we cannot see inside, but where the retina is, and the retina is actually an extension of the brain, formed from neural tissue and connected to the brain proper by the optic nerve. Is closest brain to brain connection as we can get, even if no visible light is reflected by the retina in normal conditions. Looking into the eyes we perceive small microexpressions like small movements, we see where the other's attention goes, how pupils react to emotions, you lose yourself into the other and make an empathic connection as we try to understand the other's inner universe, finding ourselves in it.
Could we truly fully love someone without making eye contact, and releasing the strong emotions related to it?
